Epidermis constitutes the dermal tissue of the plants. The epidermis is made up of specifically polygonal cells and the layer forms the surface of all plants. The surface of the stems are normally covered with thick waxy cuticle. The cuticle helps in prevention of water loss. The epidermal cells of the shoot give rise to cell extensions called epidermal hairs or trichomes. The epidermis also constitute the guard cells. The guard cells surround the pores that are present for exchange of gases and water between the inner plant environment and the atmosphere. These pores are called as stomata. The epidermis of the root is involved in absorption of minerals, water and nutrients. The root epidermis also possesses root hairs, which enhance their surface area of absorption.
