phycology

Phycology is the branch of life sience that deals with the study of algae. Algae are observed as primary producers in the aquatic ecosystem. The algae are eukaryotic organisms and are photosynthetic. They do not possess distinct roots, leaves and stems like that of higher plants. Many of the algae are single celled and microscopic. Many of the algae are multicellular and grow to a large size. The algae available at large size are sea weeds and sargassum. The prokaryotic algae also exist like cyanobacteria or blue green algae. The lichens possess algae as symbiont.
