Root system in plants

Roots are present as the underground parts of the plant while the shoot system remains exposed. The roots grow vertically downwards into the soil and with branches. The branches seen in root system are different from the branching in stems. There are no nodes and internodes in roots like what is seen in stems. The roots are also devoid of buds, stomata and leaves. The other characteristic features that are unique to the root system in plants are a root cap at the tip of the root system, no presence of pith and endodermis and presence of pericycle above the endodermis. The apex of the root consists of three areas. One of them is meant for cell division, another for cell elongation and one more for cell differentiation. Root system implants might exist as tap root or fibrous root.
